Unlundun.

Unlundun, by China Miéville.

I read it in just a few days, could hardly stop. But digesting a good book also ought to take time I think. If you eat uhm read it all at once, you’ll lose flavour, and I wanted to savor every bit of taste. So yes, I liked it.

You might want to read the book before reading on…

At first I saw a dangerous of the book becomming one of those idealistic ecohippy lecturing books, which is kinda exactly what the author is after. He creates this kinda ‘default’ shadow world of s city, a done concept. But mixing it in with a sort of broken recursive negation. It creates a complexity which, in itself, is quite beautiful. He does it explicit and implicit, mixing in idealogies, and imageries of the world, all quite recent and real, but fitting.

With it’s unpredicatable structure he keeps the story exciting, you think you know what might happen, but can never be sure. It’s a childrens book, so an happy ending isn’t unexpected, but he keeps things real, atleast the emotions. Although the setting is surealistic, everything else in a way, is not.

The book is a wonderfull, current and exciting book for about everyone who likes the genre of fantasy overlapping with real-life, young and old. Although not as dark and obscure as most of Miéville’s books, certainly it’s within the same class and quality. A good and fun book to read.
